While the metaphysical practice of tantra involves many rituals, there is no such ritual as a \"tantric massage\". Although, tantrikas have been exchanging mutual touch in many forms for hundreds of years. Tantrikas practice massage to help awaken the senses and to assist the practitioner to live 'in the moment'.
There is no one person, group, or organization that created a \"tantra massage\".
The word \"Tantra\" emphasizes the connection with the old Indian cultural background where the body is experienced as a temple of Spirit. Some would consider the client to be in a passive role. Indeed, clients are actively supported. However, unlike other massage modalities, the client is gently encouraged to participate in breathing techniques and intentional communication between the massage practitioner and the client. Some experience a deep and intense journey through their body.
The Tantramassage movement is very popular in Germany and Switzerland. Some practitioners are organized in the Association of Tantramassage in Germany. Various forms of Tantramassage have been developed.
In the early 1980s, Andro Andreas Rothe, an experienced Tantra and Bodywork Teacher in Berlin / Germany, developed a method that includes various massage techniques, elements from Bioenergetic, Yoga and Sexualtherapy.
Other ideas in the field include the work of Wilhelm Reich, Alexander Lowen, and Mantak Chia. Its adherents claim tantramassage does not include any kind of sexual exchange. Other work comes from Joseph Kramer, however his work is more aligned with Taoism rather than tantra.
